Pet-friendly family cottages Devon
Children and dogs have plenty of space to play in Devon
For a fun-packed family holiday Devon really does takes some beating. There’s truly something for everyone from the very young to the not so young. And that includes the canine members of the family.
Whether you opt for a holiday park with kids’ entertainment and nightlife included, or decide on a cosy self-catering cottage or house from which you can plan your own entertainment, you’ll find family and dog friendly accommodation plentiful in every corner of the county. So pack the children, the dogs and granny into your car and head for the West Country.
The Devon seashore has something for everyone
Almost everywhere in Devon is within an hour's drive of the sea
The sandy, safe beaches in both north and south Devon are legendary. Lounging in the sun, swimming, surfing, kayaking, sailing or just mucking about on the seashore there are popular costal towns and villages or peaceful bays just tailor-made to your own wishes.
Devon is a great county for exploring. Its expanse of countryside includes the breathtaking Dartmoor and Exmoor and around every corner of every country road you’ll come across picturesque villages with chocolate box cottages and friendly inns.
Introduce the kids to pony trekking and to steam railways. The South Devon railway provides a wonderful trip back in time taking in all the sights along the river Dart from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. There are great zoos at Paignton and Exmoor and many open farms and animal sanctuaries where the children can learn about and get close to the animals. And they will have the time of their lives at the Crealy Adventure Park near Exeter or the Milky Way Adventure Park on the north coast that provide acres of fun and games indoors and out.
Don’t let the children have all the fun though. If heritage is your bag there’s plenty to see in Devon including historic castles and houses and beautiful gardens to visit such as Rosemore. Many of the county’s towns are steeped in history, no more so than Plymouth where you can walk in the footsteps of Drake and the Pilgrim Fathers. While you’re travelling around Devon look out for restaurants and pubs that give a warm welcome to your pet dogs, these days there are many of them. Many attractions also welcome well-behaved dogs. Avoid leaving your dog in the car when you’re visiting. If the attraction doesn’t welcome dogs always arrange for one member of the family to stay with him/her and take it in turns.
It’s wonderful to be able to take your dogs on holiday with you rather than leave them in kennels or with strangers. Whatever pet friendly accommodation you stay at, although it will be strange to start with, they will be comforted being with the family. But remember they’re on holiday too so make sure that they are involved and are having a good time as well. Remember too that not everyone is comfortable around dogs so keep an ever watchful eye out for them. There are plenty of pet-friendly cottages that sleep 6 - a typical family occupancy for holidays all around the UK and not just Devon. Devon just happens to be one of those favourite family cottage holiday destinations.
