Beaches in Devon where dogs are permitted
There are numerous beaches in Devon that allow dogs from October until the end of April plus a number where dogs are allowed all year round. These beaches with no dog restrictions in 2013 are listed below. Please check details before you visit because environmental matters constantly change and this list is purely a guide and cannot be vouched for. North Devon, especially, offers a good number of natural small rocky coves.
Babbacombe beach, sand and shingle, cliffs, steep access to beach, near Torquay in south Devon
Beesands, a shingle beach near Widdicombe in south Devon
Clovelly in north Devon has a rocky shingle beach
East Portlemouth is a strip of sandy beach near the ferry landing in Salcombe Harbour
Elberry Cove beach near Paignton in south Devon, get to it using the footpath from Broadsands beach. Dogs are allowed but no toilets there.
Fishcombe Cove beach just north of Brixham in south Devon is sand and shingle. Good walks along coastal path.
Hope Cove, a sandy beach near Kingsbridge in south Devon
Lee Beach East, a shingle beach west of Ilfracombe in north Devon
Livermead Sands beach in Torbay. Sometimes closed due to problems. Check.
Lynmouth Beach in Exmoor, north Devon is a rocky shingle beach at the Lyn River Estuary.
Maidencombe Beach in Torquay has much to offer dog owners. The beach is a sand shingle mix, cliffs, there is a restaurant. toilets and the village has a number of charming thatched cottages and a thatched pub. A scenic holiday destination in south Devon.
Mortehoe Beach, a strip of sand near Woolacombe in north Devon
Saunton Beach, a sandy beach near the superb swathe of Croyde Beach in north Devon. The Milky Way Adventure Park is a short drive away.
Shaldon Beach is a sand and shingle beach near Teignmouth, south Devon
St Mary’s Bay near Brixham in south Devon offers a sand and shingle beach - dogs allowed all year round.
Slapton Sands, sand and shingle beach overlooking Slapton Ley near Torcross, south Devon. On the south west coastal path.
Stoke Beach is a rocky beach beside the River Yealm near Newton Ferrers. A good spot for watching boats and yachts.
Tunnels Beaches, Ilfracombe, north Devon - a set of beaches of a greyish sand/shingle. Victorian bathing pools access via tunnels. Plenty to do around ilfracombe.
Watcombe Beach on south west coastal path near Torquay. Sandy beach.
Watermouth in north Devon near Watermouth Castle and family theme park. East of Hele Bay.
Wild Pear Beach is beside Heddon's Mouth Beach and the Heddon Valley between Iflracombe and Lynton in north Devon. Visit Exmoor and the various small coves in the rocky coast.
Wildersmouth Beach, north east of Ilfracombe is a good place to walk your dog
Wonwell Beach, a stretch of sand near Modbury in south Devon, between Plymouth and Bigbury-on-Sea.
Dog friendly holidays and weekend breaks
The end of April or October are good times for dog friendly breaks in Devon - the weather can be reasonably pleasant for walks on the beach and sitting in sheltered spots.If planning the family annual summer break and you are taking your dog along then spending some time on the beach may be on your agenda.
